「Ph.D.

Big Orange

次回の「Ph.D.

The third Ph.D. Lounge event of 2026 was held. This marked the ninth Ph.D. Lounge event to date.

Event Overview

Date & Time: Wednesday, July 22, 2026, 12:00–13:30
Venue: Big Orange, Ito Campus, Kyushu University
Number of Participants: 11 participants (19 people in total, including student staff and university faculty and staff)

The event was held during lunchtime, and participants enjoyed interacting in a relaxed atmosphere while having lunch. With some participants joining on the day, the event had a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

In the first half of the event, Do Thi Nhinh, a third-year doctoral student at the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society, gave a mini-talk. She began by talking about photography, one of her personal interests, and shared some of the photographs she had taken, particularly of nature and wildlife. She then gave a live performance on the đàn tranh, a traditional Vietnamese plucked string instrument. Through her talk, she shared the importance of valuing one’s own interests and diverse pursuits while engaging in research, and of remaining open to a range of possibilities.

The participants listened attentively to the beautiful sound of the đàn tranh as Nhinh performed in traditional Vietnamese attire. Through her photography and music, they also gained a sense of the many different interests and pursuits that form part of her life, making the session a memorable and inspiring experience.

In the second half of the event, participants and student staff divided into groups at each table for a networking session. Conversations developed around topics such as research, career paths, and daily student life. Participants also shared concerns and experiences that they might not usually have an opportunity to discuss within their own laboratories. Lively conversations continued in every group until the end of the session.

Toward the end of the event, Professor Fukumori and Professor Huang from the Center for Health Sciences and Counseling spoke about the importance of mental health care for doctoral students. They also shared information about the physical and mental health consultation services available at the Center.

In particular, their explanation of the “impostor phenomenon,” in which people have difficulty recognizing their own abilities and achievements and may feel that they are deceiving those around them, gave participants an opportunity to reflect on their own feelings and experiences as doctoral researchers.

Participant Feedback

The musical performance was wonderful. The discussion was so lively that there did not seem to be enough time.
There are not many opportunities to talk with doctoral students from other fields, so I was glad to hear about laboratory life in other disciplines. What I particularly appreciated was realizing that, even when our fields are different, the difficulties we face can be surprisingly similar.
Being able to share my feelings made me feel a little better.

The fourth Ph.D. Lounge event of 2026 is scheduled to be held in October 2026. Further details will be announced on this website once they are finalized. We hope you will look forward to the next event!
