Ph.D.

Ph.D. Lounge 2026 – 4th

Event Overview

Date and Time: Tuesday, October 20, 2026, 17:15–18:45

Venue: Tei-Tei-Sha-House, Center Zone, Ito Campus, Kyushu University

Attendance: 20 people in total (12 event participants, 3 student staff members, and 5 faculty members)

Event Highlights

The fourth Ph.D. Lounge of 2026 was held in the evening at Tei-Tei-Sha-House. Surrounded by the warmth of wood and tatami and overlooking the Ito Campus at sunset, participants enjoyed connecting with one another in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

In the first half of the event, Associate Professor Kana Matsueda from Kyushu University’s Faculty of Social and Cultural Studies gave a mini-talk. She began by introducing her career path and sharing a graph illustrating how her motivation had changed throughout her master’s and doctoral studies. She then spoke in detail about times when her motivation declined, how she regained it, and the mindsets that helped her through those periods.

Her experiences included feelings of isolation arising from differences between her own career path and those of her peers, as well as anxiety about publishing academic papers. Hearing that Professor Matsueda had also experienced struggles that many doctoral students may find familiar gave us a sense of reassurance.

One idea that particularly stood out was the mindset of, “If this doesn’t work out, I can always do something else.” Graduate school is a time not only to conduct research, but also to think deeply about future career choices and how we want to live our lives. Because we devote so much of our daily lives to research, it can be easy to become overly focused on research when thinking about our future as well. At such times, having the emotional space to recognize that there are also possibilities beyond research and academia may help us see things more calmly and feel a little less burdened. It was a message worth remembering when things begin to feel overwhelming.

Professor Matsueda’s warm smile, together with the flexibility and quiet resilience reflected in her talk, made the session an encouraging experience for the participants.

In the second half of the event, participants, student staff, and university faculty and staff divided into groups at each table for a networking session. Conversations developed around participants’ research, daily student life, hobbies, and many other topics, providing an opportunity to connect with students whom they would not normally have the chance to meet. Professor Matsueda also visited each table, allowing participants to ask further questions and expand on topics raised during her mini-talk.

Toward the end of the event, Professor Huang from the Center for Health Sciences and Counseling spoke about the importance of mental health care for doctoral students. Information was also shared about the physical and mental health consultation services available at the Center.

Participant Feedback

“I usually only have opportunities to talk with doctoral students in my own laboratory, so this was a valuable experience. I will recommend it to some of my friends as well.”
“The seating arrangements, interactions among students, and support staff were fun and interesting. The personal academic experience shared by Professor Matsueda Kana was truly inspiring and refreshing for me.”
“I’m so happy to have attended this event! It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with others and take part in such an insightful and meaningful discussion, filled with wisdom, valuable lessons, and real-life experiences. Truly inspiring and enriching!”
