  • Nice crowd and inspiring talks.
  • There were a lot more participants, and I think it was good for the program. Interaction was very good and I enjoyed it. Hopefully, a lot more will follow as we continue to share in each other’s experiences during their PhD study journeys like that of the two presenters.

The second Ph.D. Lounge event of 2026 was held at Tei-Tei-Sha House on the Ito Campus. This marked the eighth Ph.D. Lounge event to date.

Event Overview

Date & Time: Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 17:15–18:45
Venue: Tei-Tei-Sha House, Ito Campus, Kyushu University
Number of Participants: 21

More than 20 participants from a wide range of academic fields joined the event. Including student staff members and participating university staff and faculty members involved in the event, the event brought together approximately 30 people in total. In the warm atmosphere unique to the tatami-floored venue, participants enjoyed a relaxed and friendly time of interaction.

In the first half of the event, two early-career faculty members from Kyushu University gave talks on their real experiences of research activities during their doctoral studies. They also shared advice and words of encouragement for current graduate students.

Speakers

・Dr. Naoki Nakamura (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Languages and Cultures)
・Dr. Motoko Fujiwara (Associate Professor, Faculty of Science / School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation)

In their 10-minute presentations, the speakers reflected on their own experiences during their doctoral studies and spoke openly about the setbacks and anxieties they faced in their research activities, how they overcame them, and the messages they wished to pass on to junior students. Hearing directly from those who had experienced doctoral research, which is not always smooth or straightforward, provided a valuable opportunity for the participants.

In the second half of the event, participants joined a group networking session at separate tables using conversation cards. The themes written on the cards naturally prompted discussions about research topics, career paths, and daily student life. The two speakers also joined the group discussions, answering questions from participants and sharing their own episodes, which helped create a lively atmosphere throughout the venue.

Toward the end of the event, Professor Fukumori and Professor Huang from the Center for Health Sciences and Counseling spoke about the importance of mental health care for doctoral students. They also shared information about the physical and mental health consultation services available at the Center.

  • I learned various ways to relax while conducting research, and I also made many friends who are doctoral students.
  • Nice crowd and inspiring talks.
  • There were a lot more participants, and I think it was good for the program. Interaction was very good and I enjoyed it. Hopefully, a lot more will follow as we continue to share in each other’s experiences during their PhD study journeys like that of the two presenters.
